The city of tents and of frame structures hasty and crude, of fires in open places, of Butlers' shops and canteens and booths of strolling players, of chapels and hospitals, of fluttering flags and wandering music, of restless blue soldiers, oscillating like motes in some searchlight of the giants, persisted for a long distance. From somewhere came the strains of 'Yankee Doodle.' A gust of wind blew out the folds of the stars and stripes, fastened above some regimental headquarters. Soldiers were everywhere, dimly seen within the tents where the door-flap was fastened back, about the camp-fires in open places, clustering like bees in the small squares, everywhere apparent in the foreground and divined in the distance. To left and right were lighted streets of tents, visited here and there by substantial cabins. Johnston peels away some of the historical romance of the cavalry and shows how vital artillery was in the battles, while paying close attention to the importance of planning and patience, and the role of roads, rail, horse, and boat, mixing all of these elements with descriptions of raw courage and reckless abandon. Before Gone with the Wind exploded into print, Mary Johnston's The Long Roll was one of the definitive novels about the Civil War. First sentence: “The day of my Judging dawned bright and clear and hot.” The result was the creation of an American fur trade, which fostered economic rivalries and fueled wars among the European powers, and later between the United States and Great Britain, as North America became a battleground for colonization and imperial aspirations. The news of Hudson's 1609 voyage to America ignited a fierce competition to lay claim to this uncharted continent, teeming with untapped natural resources. What became immediately apparent, however, from the Indians clad in deer skins and "good furs" was that Hudson had discovered something just as tantalizing. As Henry Hudson sailed up the broad river that would one day bear his name, he grew concerned that his Dutch patrons would be disappointed in his failure to find the fabled route to the Orient. Morrison also quickly established the types of threats the League would routinely face-over the course of their run, the Justice League had to deal with a White Martian invasion, the armies of Heaven and Hell and reality-warping djinn from the 5 th Dimension. For the first time in decades, the Justice League was restored to the “Big Seven”: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. All of that changed in 1997 with the arrival of JLA, Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s bold revamp of the team. There was a time in the early '90s when the team was made up of a bunch of lesser-known heroes like Nuklon and Bloodwynd. The Justice League hasn’t always boasted such an impressive line-up. Some threats require the League to open up their roster, like the one time they drafted the entire population of planet Earth to join the team. While DC’s premier super-team may include the most powerful beings in existence, some threats are too big even for them to handle alone. The Justice League has had an impressive roster of heroes throughout the years, but there are times when even the likes of Superman have to call in some extra help. You have this passage in the book where Noah asks Sally to define cheese for him and he says, “Because I still haven’t figured it out after two decades, where the line is between cheese and emotional extravagance that’s acceptable.” I just wonder what you were thinking about there, whether there were examples in your head, whether Noah is supposed to represent cheese or something deeper. There’s nothing like pop music for making us all think about this line. One of the questions in the book that’s somewhat more serious, and I think really interesting is the line between cheese-like cheesiness-and deep romance, sincere emotion. It just had this light, snackable, delicious quality to it in which you’re exploring some serious themes, but you’re doing it with a sense of humor and a kind of light touch throughout.
